Courtside with William Shakespeare

Wristpect Sport and Shakespeare

“What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

Playing sports with friends is a lot of fun. It is a chance to bond and share in the highs and lows on and off of the playing field or in the case of tennis, the court.

I’ve had the opportunity to play in the several different leagues offered in the metroplex in which I live. One of those leagues names its team by the captain’s name, the other two open it up for all kinds of fun.

As I read some of those team names they made me smile, then I began to wonder how they got their names.

For example:

Perhaps we’ve had some drama or we make some drama: Court Divas, Sugar and Slice, Drop Shot Divas, Double Trouble, Kick Aces, Ace Kickers, and Smart Aces.

Or maybe we have some attitude: Talk to the Forehand, Point Taken, Pain in the Ace, Not My Fault, Smashnovas, Get a Grip, Baby got Backswing, and Serves You Right.

Or maybe we are thirsty: Cerv’aces, Double Shots, and Strung Out.

Or we have a style of play: Spin Doctors, Lobba Dobba Doo, Scared Hitless, Spinderellas, Miss Hits, Racketeers, Vollywood, and Volley Girls.

Or maybe… Bossa Novas, Hot Sets, Sets in the City, Mood Swings, 10s Babes, Net Chix, Dare Doubles, Sets Appeal, Hot Flashed, Net Cases, Blabalots, and Serves with Curves.

Then there are the Wall Street ladies: Net Worth and Cheaper than Therapy.

Finally: #Love2Win

If you are reading this and one of these teams is yours, feel free to comment and tell us how you got your name. It would be a lot of fun to hear your team’s story. And if you don’t see your team’s name, ADD it in a comment!
