I always thought Vince Lombardi was the first to say, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” When I researched it I found that the quote actually belongs to former UCLA Bruin football Coach Red Saunders, though Coach Lombardi did use it. Often my emotions run wild, and as much as I hate to admit it, sometimes it feels like that statement is true, even though I know it is not. At this stage in my life just being able to play is what is really important! Don’t misunderstand me; winning does make it more fun!
Recently I’ve had the pleasure to watch a friend find herself playing her first competitive tennis and enjoying it more than she ever thought possible. After listening to many of her friends talk of their tennis exploits, she is now the one with the tales to tell! Let me just say, that I just love her tales! I love them because I've been there even if it was forever ago. I like reliving the firsts through her and remembering my own. It was fun to hear about how 8 ladies show up to practice just weeks prior to their first match as a team and none of them had ever actually played and scored a match! In fact, at that time, some of them did not know for sure how to score a match!
They figure out that game, set, match is the scoring system not just a fun phrase. But do you play 6 games total or is it first one to win 6 games? I just had to smile hearing how they figured it all out. Honestly, scoring in tennis is not for the faint at heart, love, 15, 30, 40 and deuce; who thought this up?
Now, fast forward to their first game experience and they lose 0-0 and the team loses all lines. But this is just the beginning and they are all hooked! After facing what we have all faced - losing 0-0 they remain positive and excited. Why? I think it's because they’ve now had their first adrenaline fix, and in my opinion, there is nothing out there that can compare. I think it took hold of them just as it has to all of us who love sports and competition! In fact, they already started gearing up for the next week’s match the day after their last match!
Did I mention that they have a team uniform? Did I mention that they included Wristpect Sport wristbands as a part of their uniform? I've always said that looking my best always helps me to play my best. Wristpect Sport wristbands always help me to look my best.
I look forward every week hearing about their matches. It’s been 3 weeks now and each week the team has faired better. My friend did not play week two but when she got back into the lineup she and her partner won a set and had many competitive games. Every league is different, but in this league teams score a point for each set won, so by winning a set they earned a point and as such contributed to their team's over all 5-4 win! Pretty sure there is a personal match win in her near future!
Either way, winning or losing, pretty sure these ladies would not agree with either Coach Saunders or Coach Lombardi. In fact I believe they would agree with Sportswriter Grantland Rice who said, "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game!" Maybe all of us should view it this way too. Just a thought.
