What kind of towel do you use when you play tennis? -- 2.0

Can one say too much about tennis towels? Probably and I’m just the one to try!

US OPEN tennis towels

True story: One of the ladies I play tennis with is a pro tournament towel magnet. (Judy do you recognize yourself?) I have seen her posts on Facebook from the US Open and BNP Indian Wells to name just two, of her showing off the towels that were handed to her from players. I’m not kidding you; the players just love her! Yes I’m jealous! Granted I haven’t attended nearly the number of tournaments she has, nor have I been in the on court seats that she has so kinda hard to get a towel if I’m not there like she is. I’ve only ever bought the towel from the pro tournament or been given one by a friend that goes and she bought them. (Almost as good as getting one from a player)

Last year I while watching coverage of Wimbledon, Brad Gilbert spoke on how he has a player towel from Wimbledon for every year since he has played there. In fact he’s traded towels to have both the men and women’s towels. He does what it takes to get as many as he can and it’s some fun game he plays with other guys from the tour.

This year while listening to the coverage of Wimbledon this year I heard MaryJo Fernandez say that she uses her Wimbledon towels in her guest bathrooms. (Guessing her guests may include some former Wimbledon Champions!)

Those player towels are awesome towels. Full, plush, and memorable! One year my doubles partner and I were invited to play in the Simply the Best tournament hosted by the Texas USTA Section in Austin. Here is the towel that we all received as ‘players’! It has been stored away so as not to be ruined or lost and will now be used in my continuing effort to stay out of my towel funk!

What is your favorite towel? Is it your favorite because it was a gift? Did you earn it or win it? Is it oversized, hand towel sized? Is it like a loofah or soft and plush? Feel free to comment here on what you think makes for the best tennis towel! And maybe let us know if you think we should make a towel!

But what does it do?

Sonic wears a wristband

I wear a wristband/sweatband that helps me wipe the sweat off of my face in between points when I play tennis. In the past I didn't wear one, but since I started working at Wristpect Sport I started wearing them. Just how credible would I be as a salesman espousing the benefits of a Wristpect Sport wristband if I didn’t wear one? So in the interests of salesmanship and credibility I started wearing a wristband while playing tennis.

I have many people look at the uniquely patterned and designed WS wristbands and ask me, “What do they do”? I am a little surprised by this, but I shouldn’t be and I should note it as a real compliment. Why? Because it means that a WS wristband appears distinctly different, so different in fact as to beg the question, "What does it do"?

Wristpect sport winners/circleSo what do I actually tell the people who ask me what does it do? The easy quick answer is: It wipes the sweat from my face in between points when I can’t get to a towel. The complicated answer: The outer sweat-ban ™ wicking material stays dry even after it wipes off my sweat, the inner cotton terry fabric absorbs any left over liquid awesomeness i.e. sweat!

It’s a simple thing and on many days it is more like a fashion accessory than it is a functional product. But, on those days when the temperatures run really high and/or the humidity is high, it is a much-needed mini towel that keeps my eyes from burning and my hand gripping my racquet.

Maybe in the past I didn't wear a wristband, but times are a changing and WS wristbands have changed the way I dress for tennis!

The Sweatiest Things--airborne!

There it is, coming at you end over end, sweat flinging over the heads of those in the crowd and you…catch it!! Fantastic AND yuck all at the same time! What is it you wonder?

Why one of the most functional necessary accessories of professional tennis players and athletes worldwide. An item customarily thrown into the stands post event because: one, it’s easier than throwing a shoe and two, this little item seems an economically wise choice, due to its supposed inconsequential value.

My shoe hint above and this picture surely helps you guess that I’m writing about the wristband, yes?

But is it fair to say the wristband is of little importance when many a pro athlete is seen putting their lucky wristband on with such intense ritualistic fashion, it’s as if it’s their armor?! Indeed the wristband is of value and worthy of any epic sport battle!

Honestly, the sweatiest wristband I’ve been witness to is, when I met Andre Agassi years ago, post match. I knew I only had milliseconds with the star yet was taken by the young boy standing near me waiting to meet his idol. Some might ask for a hug, kiss or ‘rock star undies’, I asked for Andre’s wristband, for the boy. Andre Agassi wearing wristbandsAndre obliged and launched it to me while also taking a moment to visit with me and the young boy.

I knew that moment was HUGE for that boy, but I never knew that ‘wristband moment ‘ would be equally memorable to me, and lead to a Sweat Management company!

I’m happy to now be a part of giving the wristband its due props with our style of fashion ‘cause the wristband does after all serve a great purpose!
